Computer won't boot after new graphics card installation – Problem Solved
In a customer’s computer, after NVidia graphics (VGA) card replacement, his computer didn’t boot anymore in Windows 7 Normal mode. The first action we tried to resolve this problem was to boot into Windows Safe Mode and then to uninstall all NVidia drivers found there. After that we restarted the computer again and we let Windows to find and install the new graphic card driver automatically. But upon the first –required- restart, the problem was still there: Windows were stuck on boot and nothing happened. After doing some research, we finally found the following solution to resolve this problem.
Requirements: .NET framework 3.5
Supported OS: Windows XP up to Windows 8.1 (x86/X64)
Attention: Give this method a try at your own risk, only if you face similar problems when you try to install or uninstall your new graphics card using Vendor’s recommended procedure and instructions.
How to fix boot problems after a graphics card installation.
Step 1: Start your computer in “Safe Mode with Networking”.
To do this:
1. Shut down your computer.
2. Start up your computer (Power On) and as your computer is booting up, press the "F8" key before the Windows logo appears.
3. Using your keyboard arrows, select the "Safe Mode with Networking" option and press "Enter".
Step 2: Download and run the “Display Driver Uninstaller” utility.
Display Driver Uninstaller is a driver removal utility that can help you completely uninstall AMD/NVIDIA graphics card drivers and packages from your system, without leaving leftovers behind (including registry keys, folders and files, driver store).
1. Open your Internet browser & download Display Driver Uninstaller DDU utility from one of these locations:
- Official DDU Download Website: http://www.wagnardmobile.com/DDU/

2. Press the “Download” button and save the “Display Driver Uninstaller” utility on your computer (e.g. your “Desktop”).
3. When “DDU v12.3.exe” file download process is completed, navigate at the download location of the file (e.g. your “Desktop”) and double-click at “DDU v12.3.exe”.
(Press “Run” when asked…)
4. Specify a destination folder for the extracted files (e.g “C:\Users\Admin\Desktop\DDUv123”) and then press the “Extract” button.
5. When the extraction is completed, open the destination folder (e.g. “DDUv123” on your Desktop) and double-click at “Display Driver Uninstaller” application.
6. Press “OK” to DDU warning message.*
Note: The below described procedure is usually effective and doesn't cause problems to your computer. But for safety reasons, it's better to take a backup of your personal files before you use the DDU utility.
7. When the “Display Driver Uninstaller” main application starts, select (1) your graphic card model (e.g. “NVIDIA”), check (2) the “Remove C:\AMD and or C:\NVIDIA folders” option and then press the “Clean and restart (Highly Recommended)” button.
After computer restart, Windows should boot normally and without problems.
Step 3: Download and install Graphics Driver.
When your computer restarts, navigate to your graphics card manufacturer website to download and install the corresponding driver for your graphics card:
