FIX: No Sound After Windows 11 24H2 Update.

If you lost sound after updating Windows 11 to version 24H2, continue reading below to fix the problem.

Many users have reported sound issues, non-functional or missing audio devices, after installing Windows 11 24H2 version, or after updating Windows 11 v23H2. Since these issues can occur due to several reasons (eg. Windows updates, driver conflicts, incorrect audio settings, etc.), in this guide you will find detailed instructions and various methods to fix the problem.

How to FIX: No Audio after installing Windows 11 v24H2.*

* Important Notes:
1. If you're using a USB DAC Audio device or other audio device and you lost the sound after installing the KB5050021 update, then do one of the following:

a. Uninstall the KB5050021 update from Windows Update-> Update History -> Uninstall Updates. (If you 'running Windows 10 uninstall the KB5049981).
b. Download and install from the Microsoft Update Catalog the KB5050094 update if you're running Windows 11 v24H2, or the KB5050092 if you're running Windows 11 v23H2.

2. If you own a DELL laptop and you lost audio after Windows 11 24H2 update, see these instructions from the manufacturer: No Sound after Updating Audio Driver on Windows 11 (Version 24H2).

Method 1. Install all Windows & Optional Updates.

Before proceeding with the methods below to fix the "no sound after 24H2 update" issue, make sure your computer is fully up to date with all available Windows and driver updates. To do that:

1. Navigate to Start -> Settings -> Windows Update, click Check for updates and then click Download & install to install all the available updates.

2. After installing the standard Windows Updates, navigate again to Start -> Settings -> Windows Update, click Advanced Options and then click Optional Updates under "Additional Options".

3. In Optional updates, check all the checkboxes to install all the available Windows and Driver updates and click Download & install.

4. When the installation is complete, restart your computer and check if the problem is resolved.

Method 2. Rollback Sound Driver.

One of the effective methods to solve the "no sound in Windows 11 24H2" problem is to roll back the previous sound card driver.

1. Right-click on the Start menu and open Device Manager.

2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers. Then right-click on the Audio device and select Properties.

3. Click Roll Back Driver. *

*Note: If the 'Roll Back Driver' button is inactive continue to next method.

4. Select a reason for the roll back and then click Yes to install the previous driver version for your sound card. When the installation is completed, restart your PC and check if the problem is fixed.

Method 3. Uninstall/Reinstall Sound Card.

Sometimes uninstalling and reinstalling audio drivers can help resolve the no sound issue.

1. In Device Manager, right-click on your audio card and select Uninstall device.

2. Then, restart your computer to force Windows to re-install the sound drivers.
3. Finally, check if the sound is working. If not, proceed to next method.

Method 4. Install 'High Definition Audio Controller' driver.

Another effective method to fix the audio problems in Windows 111/10, is to use Microsoft's 'High Definition Audio' driver for your sound card.

1. In Device Manager, right-click on your audio card and select Update Driver.

2. At the next screen, click Browse my computer for drivers…

3. …and then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.

4. Now uncheck the Show compatible hardware checkbox and select from the Microsoft manufacturer the High Definition Audio Controller driver. When done, click Next.

6. Click Yes at 'Update Driver Warning' message and let Windows to install the new driver.

7. After the driver installation check the sound and if the problem persists, uninstall the new driver (by choosing 'Uninstall Device" from right-click menu), restart the computer and proceed to next method.

Method 5. Set the Correct Audio Output Device.

1. Right-click on the Speaker icon in the taskbar and select Sound settings.

2. On the Output, make sure the Speakers are selected to play audio and the correct audio device is the default. If not, select the correct audio device and then test the sound to confirm functionality.

Method 6. Disable Audio Enhancements.

1. Right-click on the Speaker icon in the taskbar and select Sound settings.
2. Under Output click on Speakers.

3. Scroll down the set Audio Enhancements to Off.
4. Now, test the sound again and if the problem persists, re-enable Audio Enhancements and proceed to next method.

Method 7. Run Audio Troubleshooter.

1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.

2. Copy and paste the below command to open the "Playing Audio" troubleshooter.

• msdt.exe /id AudioPlaybackDiagnostic

3. Click Next at first screen. Then choose your Output device (eg. "Speakers") and click Next again.

4. Then, click Yes, Open Audio Enhancements.

5. In Speaker Properties, check Disable all enhancements and click Apply > OK.

6. Now, close the Troubleshooter and test the sound again.*

* Note: If the audio problem persists, open the troubleshooter again, but this time select No, Do not open Audio Enhancements and let Windows to try to resolve the problem.

Method 8. Restart Required Audio Services.

1. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box.
2. Type services.msc and press Enter (OK).

4a. Make sure that the Startup Type of the following three (3) services is set to Automatic. (If not, double-click the service and change the startup type to "Automatic")

• Windows Audio
• Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
• Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

4b. Then right-click on each of the services and select Restart.

5. After restarting the services test the sound and if the problem persists, proceed to next method.

Method 9. Go back to previous Windows 11 version.*

If, after following the methods above, you still have no sound, then your last option is to uninstall 24H2 and restore your system to the previous version of Windows 11.*

* Note: As a last resort to fix the "audio not working: issue and before continuing to roll back to the previous version of Windows, try the following:

1. Check on you device's manufacturer support site, to see if there is available to download and install an updated driver for the audio device.
2. Install and run the Intel® Driver & Support Assistant (Intel® DSA) to install/update the drivers for all the Intel devices on your system.

To go back Windows 11 to previous version:

1. Navigate to Start -> Settings  -> System  -> Recovery and under 'Recovery options' click Go back.

2. On "Go back to earlier build" screen, click Next.

3. If prompted to "Check for updates?" click No, thanks.

4. Finally click Next again and click Go back to earlier build to restore your system to the previous version of Windows 11.
