Copilot Missing or Grayed Out in Outlook: How to Fix
If the Copilot button is missing or grayed out in Outlook, or Copilot has suddenly disappeared after previously working, this guide provides step-by-step instructions for resolving the problem.
The issue can occur because of an Outlook bug, an incorrect Microsoft 365 account or license state, an unsupported Office update channel, disabled Connected Experiences, or organization policies that prevent access to Copilot.
Check If You're Affected by a Known Copilot Issue in Classic Outlook
Before changing Outlook settings or reinstalling Microsoft 365, first check whether you're affected by Microsoft's current known issue in classic Outlook for Windows.
In its latest update on August 5, 2026, Microsoft stated that it was investigating an issue that may cause Copilot buttons to disappear or become unavailable in classic Outlook for Windows build 20026.20182 and later. The issue can affect users with Copilot Chat as well as users with a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
Affected users have reported the following symptoms:
- The Copilot button is missing from the upper-right area above the ribbon.
- The Copilot icon is missing from the Outlook app bar.
- Copilot appears in the Add apps section, but clicking Open does nothing.
- A manually added Copilot command appears grayed out.
To check if you're affected by this issue, check your Outlook build:
1. Open classic Outlook.
2. Go to File > Office Account > About Outlook.
3. Under About Outlook, check the Outlook version and build number.
4. If you're using build 20026.20182 or later and experience the symptoms above, Microsoft's current workaround is to use new Outlook or Outlook on the web until the issue is resolved.
Important: For this specific issue, Microsoft says that creating a new Outlook profile, clearing Outlook's cache or local configuration, signing back into Office, and restarting Outlook or Windows have not consistently restored the missing Copilot controls.
If you're not affected by this known issue, continue with the methods below.
How to Fix Copilot Buttons Missing or Grayed Out in Outlook
- Check Your Microsoft 365 Account and Copilot Access
- Update Microsoft 365 Apps
- Update the Microsoft 365 License
- Change the Microsoft 365 Apps Update Channel
- Enable Connected Experiences
- Make Sure Copilot Is Enabled in New Outlook or Outlook on the Web
- Check Copilot Organization Settings in Office 365 Admin center
Method 1. Check Your Microsoft 365 Account and Copilot Access
First, make sure Outlook is signed in with the Microsoft account that has access to Copilot.
This is especially important if you:
- Have multiple Microsoft accounts signed in.
- Use both personal and work or school accounts.
- Recently changed your Microsoft 365 subscription or Copilot license.
- Use a Microsoft 365 Family subscription.
1. In classic Outlook, go to File > Office Account.
2. Under User Information, verify that Outlook is signed in with the correct Microsoft account. If the wrong account is signed in, click Sign out, sign in again with the correct Microsoft account, and restart all Microsoft 365 apps.
3. Next, check that your account is licensed to use Copilot.
- For a work or school account, contact your Microsoft 365 administrator and verify that your account has the Copilot entitlement required for the feature you're trying to use (for this task follow the instructions on Method-7).
Note: A paid Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on is not required for every Copilot feature in Outlook. Available features depend on the account, subscription, and Copilot entitlement.
- If you use Microsoft 365 Family, integrated Copilot benefits in Microsoft 365 desktop apps are available to the subscription owner and aren't automatically extended to everyone with whom the subscription is shared.
4. Also, make sure you're using your primary Exchange Online mailbox. Copilot scenarios aren't available in archive, group, shared, or delegate mailboxes, or in mailboxes that aren't hosted in Exchange Online.
If you're signed in with the correct account and have the required Copilot entitlement, proceed to the next method.
Method 2. Update Microsoft 365 Apps
An outdated version of Microsoft 365 Apps can prevent available Copilot features from appearing correctly.
To install the latest available updates:
1. Open Outlook and go to File > Office Account.
2. Click Update Options > Update Now.
3. Wait while Microsoft 365 checks for and installs any available updates.
4. Restart Outlook and check whether Copilot is now available.
Note: If you're using classic Outlook build 20026.20182 or later and match Microsoft's current known issue described earlier, updating Outlook is not currently documented as a fix for that issue. Use new Outlook or Outlook on the web instead.
Method 3. Update the Microsoft 365 License
If Copilot was recently enabled, your Microsoft 365 subscription changed, or a Copilot license was recently assigned, the Microsoft 365 desktop apps may need to refresh their local license state.
1. Open Outlook and go to File > Office Account.
2. Click Update License.
3. Sign in with the Microsoft account that has the required Copilot entitlement.
4. Close Outlook and any other Microsoft 365 applications.
5. Open Outlook again and check whether the Copilot button appears.
If Copilot is still missing or grayed out, continue to the next method.
Method 4. Change the Microsoft 365 Apps Update Channel
If you're using Outlook with a work or school account or have a Microsoft 365 Family, check which Microsoft 365 Apps update channel is installed.
Microsoft's guidance states that Microsoft 365 Apps should use Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel for Copilot. Copilot features enabled by the user's assigned license aren't available in Microsoft 365 Apps running on Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel.
Step 1. Check the Microsoft 365 Apps Update Channel.
To check the Microsoft Office update channel:
1. Open Outlook and go to File > Office Account.
2. Under About Outlook, check the installed update channel.
- If you see Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel, proceed to the next method.
- If you see Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel proceed according to your situation:
- If your computer is managed by your organization, contact your IT administrator to change the Microsoft Apps update channel for devices in the organization.
- If your computer is not managed by an organization, proceed to the next step to change the update channel manually.
Step 2. Change the Microsoft 365 Apps Update Channel
To change the update channel of Microsoft 365 apps:
Important: Don't manually change the Microsoft 365 Apps update channel on an organization-managed computer unless instructed to do so by your administrator.
1. Close all Office applications.
2. In Search, type cmd. Then, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
3. In Command Prompt, run these commands one by one:
cd "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun"OfficeC2RClient.exe /changesetting Channel=CurrentOfficeC2RClient.exe /update user
4. After executing the above commands, you will see an Office update window. Wait until the installation is complete.
5. When the updates are installed, open any Office application and follow the instructions in Step 1 to verify that the update channel has changed.
6. Next, click on Update Options and select Update Now to install all Office updates.
7. Wait for the updates to be installed. Then restart Outlook and check whether Copilot button is available.
Method 5. Enable Connected Experiences
Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps depends on Microsoft's Connected Experiences. If the required Connected Experiences are disabled, Copilot may be unavailable in Outlook.
To check these settings in classic Outlook:
1. Go to File > Office Account.
2. Under Account Privacy, click Manage Settings.
3. Make sure the following options are enabled:
- Experiences that analyze your content
- All connected experiences
4. Restart Outlook and check whether Copilot is available.
If these settings are grayed out or you cannot change them on a work computer, they may be controlled by your organization's Microsoft 365 policies. In this case, proceed to Method 7
Method 6. Make Sure Copilot Is Enabled in New Outlook or Outlook on the Web
If you're using new Outlook for Windows or Outlook on the web, Copilot can be turned on or off for your account from Outlook settings.
To check the setting:
1. Open Settings in Outlook and select Copilot on the left bar.
2. Make sure Turn on Copilot is enabled.
Note: This setting is currently available in new Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the web, but not in classic Outlook for Windows.
Method 7. Check Copilot Organization Settings in Office 365 Admin center
If you use Outlook with a work or school account and Copilot is still missing or grayed out, your organization's Microsoft 365 settings may be preventing access. In this case, contact your Microsoft 365 administrator to check the following:
1. Verify the user's Copilot license
- In the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Users > Active users.
- Select the affected user, and then select Licenses and apps.
- Verify that the user has the Microsoft 365 Copilot license or qualifying Microsoft 365 entitlement required for the affected Copilot feature.
2. Check whether Copilot Chat is pinned in Microsoft 365 apps
- In the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Copilot > Settings > Pin Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat.
- Check that Pin Copilot Chat in Microsoft 365 apps is selected.
Note: This setting controls whether Copilot Chat is pinned in Outlook and other Microsoft 365 apps. It doesn't assign a Copilot license or enable Copilot features that the user isn't entitled to use.
3. Check access to the Copilot app
In the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Settings > Integrated apps, select Copilot, and verify that the affected user or group is allowed to install and use the app.
4. Allow Connected Experiences in Microsoft 365 Privacy Policies.
Copilot relies on Microsoft 365 Connected Experiences. To check the organization's privacy policies for Microsoft 365 Apps:
1. Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center.
2. Open Customization > Policy Management.
3. Enable the following policies:
- Allow the use of connected experiences in Office
- Allow the use of connected experiences in Office that analyze content
If Allow the use of connected experiences in Office is disabled, Microsoft states that Copilot features won't be available to users in certain Microsoft 365 apps.
Note: If these policies aren't configured, the corresponding connected experiences are available by default.
Summary
If Copilot is missing or grayed out in Outlook, first check whether you're affected by Microsoft's current known issue. If not, verify your account and Copilot access, and then check the Microsoft 365 Apps version, license state, update channel, Connected Experiences, Copilot setting, and organization policies. As a workaround, you can use new Outlook or Outlook on the web.
Avoid recreating your Outlook profile or reinstalling Microsoft 365 unless you're experiencing other Outlook problems that indicate a broader profile or installation issue.
