Some combination of the following cleared up my problem: Your Method 6 and updating the Dell monitor software. So, I would additionally suggest that, for users whose Explorer crash problem occurs ONLY when a folder (or large folder) is open on the external monitor, as a first step they should update their monitor software and test. If still problematic, use Method 6 and test. If still problematic, go through the other Methods.

At the top of the explanation, I think the following advice would be helpful:

    – If you are using only your laptop or desktop display (screen), go through the Methods shown below in sequence.

    – If you are using a second monitor (HDMI, etc.), check if the problem occurs when the a folder is open on that monitor vs open on your laptop/desktop display. If it occurs only with the second monitor, do Method 6 first. [This is what happened to me. A folder with hundreds of files, when open on my laptop, works fine. But when open on a Dell HDMI monitor, Explorer crashes. I only figured this out after going through Methods 1-5, none of which worked. I will try Method 6 next. If it doesn't work, I'll just have to deal with an outdated/bad/crummy monitor, or replace it. Query: If the problem occurs only with an external monitor, will Methods 1-5 ever work?]

PS: Thanks for the helpful page in any case. Also for the NirSoft referral.
